A purported MetaMask airdrop on March 31 has been the subject of “false rumours,” which MetaMask has warned its users are not only false but also dangerous. Several Twitter accounts that claim to be associated with MetaMask or an airdrop of MetaMask tokens have been discovered by Cointelegraph. MetaMask has denied the rumours and urged users to stay vigilant for fake sites. MetaMask has been linked to rumours of an imminent airdrop due to a “fireside chat” session with ConsenSys CEO and Ethereum co-founder Joe Lubin at ETHDenver 2023.
Data from DappRadar reveals that activity on MetaMask nearly tripled as a result of the rumours, increasing from 8,000 transactions per day to 21,460 on March 27. ConsenSys, the parent company of MetaMask, has been contacted by Cointelegraph for clarification regarding whether there are plans for a future airdrop.
